What We Do
The Psychology Department at Utica University prepares students to pursue professional careers and/or post-baccalaureate education in the psychological and behavioral sciences.

The mission of the Department of Psychology at Utica University is to provide students with an education that encompasses content information and theoretical approaches in psychology and emphasizes critical thinking, mastery of empirical methodologies and development of strong communication skills.
This education prepares students to pursue professional careers and/or post-baccalaureate education in the psychological and behavioral sciences. The department also provides a supportive environment for professional and scholarly activities of its faculty and provides the entire academic community at Utica University with instructional support in areas related to the psychological sciences.
The Department of Psychology at Utica University is committed to the on-going work of creating an environment where all human beings feel welcomed, supported, and respected. We believe that working to foster greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in our department is both consistent with our values and a fundamental aspect of providing an outstanding education to our students.

Further, we pledge to critically examine, and integrate into our curriculum, how our profession has perpetuated systemic injustices. For example, the American Psychological Association (APA) has recently acknowledged its roles in perpetuating systemic racism and discrimination, pledged to work toward dismantling racist practices (https://www.apa.org/about/policy/dismantling-systemic-racism), and issued an apology (https://www.apa.org/about/policy/racism-apology).
We also pledge to examine and implement evidence-based practices concerning how to reduce and mitigate the effects of biases and how to best foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in our classrooms, our research, and our interactions with colleagues at Utica University and within our professional organizations. We support the goals and scientific pursuits outlined in the statement from the Association for Psychological Science (https://www.psychologicalscience.org/diversity-equity-inclusion) below and pledge to encourage our students to not only become more aware of these goals and relevant scientific findings, but to also apply the findings in their everyday lives and to participate in the next generation of psychologists to further pursue a more just and equitable world.
We fully embrace the guiding organizational principle that psychological science has the ability to transform society for the better and can and must play a central role in advancing human welfare and the public interest. To that end, we support the pursuit of a wide variety of scientific work that furthers our understanding of the causes and harmful effects of racism, stereotypes, and inequities; the psychological and societal benefits of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the most effective ways to foster these outcomes and advance a more just and equitable world.
