Biography
Dr. Unnati Shah is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Utica University. She earned her Ph.D. from S.V. National Institute of Technology in 2022, where her dissertation introduced novel methods for detecting and managing ambiguities and conflicts in software requirements. Her research focuses on AI-driven requirements engineering, leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and advanced natural language processing to improve clarity, detect conflicts, and enhance precision in complex software systems. She has published extensively in top venues, including REFSQ, a leading international conference on requirements engineering, Procedia Computer Science (Elsevier), Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges, and ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes.
Dr. Shah applies AI in her courses and assessments to promote transparency, equity, and accountability in education, exemplified by her work on Document, Verify, Explain: A Transparent Accountability Framework for Equitable Generative AI Use in Computer Science Education. She has been recognized with multiple honors, including the Harold T. Clark, Jr. Award for Research (Utica University, 2025), Excellence in Research & Higher Education Award (C.K. Pithawala College of Engineering and Technology, 2026), Best Reviewer Award (JENRS, 2024), and Elite & Silver distinctions in NPTEL Software Engineering (IIT Kharagpur, 2020). She is a certified AWS Academy Educator, a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor, and holds a Responsible Conduct of Research certification (CITI Program, 2024–2027).
Dr. Shah actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and interdisciplinary programs. She supports students through independent studies, senior projects, conference publications, and industry-partnered research, including initiatives applying AI to healthcare challenges, generative AI in education, and advanced software engineering problems.
Beyond academia, Dr. Shah holds a B.A. in Indian classical dance (Bharatanatyam), enjoys singing and writing poetry, and leads student workshops on resilience, lifelong learning, and personal growth, inspired by her late grandmother, Praffulla Asarawala.
Opportunities for Student Research and Collaboration
Dr. Shah offers year-round opportunities for motivated students to engage in applied research across Artificial Intelligence, Software Requirements Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data-Driven Systems, and healthcare AI applications. Students collaborate on independent studies, senior projects, conference papers, and industry-partnered initiatives. Summer research positions are also available. Students interested in advancing practical AI applications, exploring software engineering research, or participating in interdisciplinary projects are encouraged to get involved.
